Mary Murphy
Nat. Deg in Des.H.Dip in Ed. LSDI
Murphy's art explores the human form in line and form through a variety of media... her interest lies in the experiences that mold our bodies and indeed alter them. The resulting work of sinued muscles, paper dry wrinkles, bone jutting through skin and the play of light over them, make for powerful viewing. Murphy's investigative studies have made ample use of many mediums and techniques, from oil & acrylic paint, charcoal, pastels to fibers, various fabrics, yarns, needles and threads. This technique of replacing pen and paper with needle and thread, as a method of drawing, hearkens back to her classical art and fashion design training and illustrates the importance of mark making in her expression. The materials used evolves naturally and organically over time thus becoming a 3D reflection or diary of her life.
"Eloquence to the touch resides not in straight lines but in unstraight lines or in many curved and straight lines together. They appear and disappear, are now shallow, now broken off or lengthened or swelling, they rise and sink beneath my fingers, they are full of sudden starts and pauses, and their variety is inexhaustible and wonderful."
